This recipe was handed down by my mother-in-law as my husband was very fond of these cookies. (I think she wanted to make sure he didn’t come back home!) They are an old world cookie, with a great balance of flavors and texture.

2 1/2 c. flour (11 – 1/4 oz.)
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. cloves
1/2 t. ginger
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. baking soda
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. molasses (138 g.)
1/2 c. melted butter
1 egg slightly beaten

1/2 c. sugar for finishing

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Lightly spray cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  • Mix flour, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, salt, and baking soda in large bowl. Set aside.
  • Mix 1/2 c. sugar, molasses, melted butter and beaten egg in another bowl and slowly stir into dry ingredients.
  • Place remaining 1/2 c. sugar in small bowl and set aside.
  • Shape tablespoons of dough into 1 inch balls and roll in sugar to coat.
  • Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake 15 minutes or until done.
  • Cool on sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to rack to finish cooling.
  • Store in airtight container.
