After 2 muddlers, I finally found the perfect one from Amazon (Oxo) that has a nylon head with little points that really crushes into the mint and lime.
12 fresh mint leaves
1/2 juicy lime, cut into 4 wedges
1 tablespoons white sugar
1 heaping cup crushed ice
1 – 1/2 fluid ounces white rum (use 2 oz. if you like it stronger:)
1/2 cup club soda (or tonic water)
Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass.
Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice.
Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice.
Leave lime mixture in the glass and top with crushed ice.
Pour the rum over the ice, and add the club soda.
Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired.
Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.
Serve with a slender straw (may have to cut an inch off of it).
