Gianna is a baking rock star. She made these beautiful, tasty, pretzels with me over Facetime. They are very kid friendly.
1 package instant yeast
¾ cup warm water
1 tablespoon sugar
2 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 egg
kosher salt for sprinkling
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spray with vegetable oil.
Pour warm water in a mixing bowl.
Sprinkle the yeast onto the warm water.
Add the sugar and stir.
Let stand until mixture foams, about 5 minutes.
Place the flour and salt in another bowl.
Add the yeast/water/sugar mixture and stir until it forms a dough ball.
Sprinkle flour on the counter and knead the dough until it is smooth, about 3 minutes.
If dough is dry, sprinkle with some water, if it is too sticky, sprinkle with flour.
Roll pieces of dough into ropes and make fun-shaped or traditional pretzels.
Lay pretzels on the prepared cookie sheet.
In a small bowl, use a fork and beat the egg until well blended.
Brush pretzels with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
Bake pretzels for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Let cool on a rack.
If desired brush with melted butter, or dip pretzels into melted butter.
